The National Health Service provides health care to people free of charge but there are some exceptions, there are a number of other services for which fees are charged this falls under Non-NHS workload.
The charges exist because the service is one that is not covered by the NHS, for example, providing medical reports for insurance companies or employers.
Examples of Non-NHS services for which GPs can charge their own NHS patients
- Accident/sickness certificates for insurance purposes
- School fee and holiday insurance certificates
- Reports for Health clubs to certify that patients are fit or not fit to exercise
- Private prescriptions for travel purposes
Whilst every effort will be made to complete these reports within 8 weeks, there may be times when this deadline is not achievable due to various circumstances such as staff leave or the amount of information required from the report.
The Practice endeavours to undertake this type of work in a timely manner, however we must stress that GPs are under no obligation to complete non NHS work and therefore the completion of these reports may take place outside of NHS time as the needs of the practice must always be a priority.
If the medical report requires a face to face or telephone appointment, there may also be a delay as this appointment may need to take place outside of a GPs regular clinic. We will contact you at the earliest opportunity to arrange this with you.
You can contact the practice for more information regarding these fees.
We appreciate your patience and if you have not heard anything after 8 weeks please do not hesitate to contact us for an update.
